Cool Season grass varieties are ideal for growth during cool portions of the season (60 to 75 degrees). They may become dormant during hot weather.

Tall Fescue

  • A medium density, bunch-type grass, medium to dark green color.
  • A course to medium blade texture with an extensive root structure.
  • Moderately shade tolerant with good heat and cold tolerance.
  • Grows well in a wide range of soil types and is well suited for home lawns.
  • Grows best with about 1 inch of water per week and yearly fall applications of fertilizer.
  • Recommended cutting height of 3 to 4 inches and higher in the heat of the summer.

Meadowspring Turf Farm offers two varieties of tall fescue (cool season grasses):

Meadowspring Tall Fescue

Meadowspring Tall Fescue Sod is a mixture of tall fescue and a small percent of Kentucky Bluegrass. This mixture produces a wider blade grass that enables it to be moderately shade and drought tolerant. Meadowspring Tall Fescue will perform well throughout Virginia and works well on lawns. This product is well suited for moderately used areas where excessive traffic is not anticipated.

RTF® Sod

Not all grass is created equal. Over two decades ago, Barenbrug turf scientists developed RTF® (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue). This remarkable Tall fescue variety has the unique ability to spread aggressively for optimal performance. This innovative, patented technology has consistently performed in some of the world’s most demanding sports arenas and courses.

[BACK TO TOP - Our Grasses]

Meadowspring Turf Farm carries Bermudagrass and Zoysia grass to meet the extreme temperatures and drought conditions which can often be encountered during Virginia summers. These species will go dormant during the cool season and winter months.

Bermudagrass

Bermuda is extremely drought and traffic tolerant and requires full sunlight. It is great for lawns, golf courses, athletic fields and other areas where extensive winter traffic is not anticipated. Bermudagrass is a warm season grass that goes dormant in the winter in Virginia.

Zoysia

Zoysia is extremely drought resistant and slightly more shade tolerant than Bermuda. It functions well on lawns and moderately used recreational areas where excessive winter traffic is not expected. Zoysia is a warm season grass that goes dormant in the winter in Virginia.

Meadowspring Turf Farm grows four varieties of bermudagrass (warm season grasses):

NorthBridge™ Bermudagrass
Developed by the Oklahoma State University breeding program, NorthBridge™ Bermudagrass is a high quality, sterile triploid adapted for use on sports fields, golf course fairways, collars, tee boxes and in home lawns.
It has rated highly in the NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) trials for shear strength and traffic recovery.
NorthBridge is quicker to establish than Latitude 36 and also offers outstanding cold hardiness, high traffic tolerance and exceptional visual quality. It is an excellent choice for use in the southern U.S. through the transition zone and the upper region of bermudagrass adaptation. The NorthBridge name and logo are trademarks of Sod Solutions, Inc.

Celebration Bermudagrass
Celebration Bermudagrass is chosen for its dark blue-green color, slow vertical growing habit, excellent drought tolerance and its superior handling traits. Celebration is the first bermuda to perform well in light - moderate shade and will thrive in hot, humid conditions. Celebration is a fine textured, broader leaf and will perform well in sandy and clay soil types
. The Celebration Bermuda name and logo are trademarks of Sod Solutions, Inc. U.S. Plant Patent #11,181.

TIFTUF™
TIFTUF™ Bermuda is sold only as a certified bermudagrass. It set the new scientific standard in drought resistance and sustainability - requiring less water and recovering from drought faster than any other bermudagrass on the market. TIFTUF™ has a fine texture, bright green color, and boasts superior recovery from traffic and injury. It is the all around best choice for professionals and homeowners seeking a low maintenance turf with excellent performance under stress.

Meadowspring Turf Farm offers two varieties of zoysia:

Empire Zoysia
EMPIRE Zoysia is the first variety zoysia grass adaptable to climate in the deep south. It thrives well in hot and humid climate. This blade grass is finer and broader than other warm grasses and performs well in sandy and clay soils. It is very dense grass which helps prevent weed growth. The Empire name and logo are registered trademarks of Sod Solutions, Inc. U.S. Plant Patent #11,466.

Meyer Zoysia
Meyer Zoysia creates a dense turf with a medium texture. With the dense growth this grass is resistant to weed germination. It is claimed to require less maintenance, with great wear and cold tolerance. Performs in full sun but will grow well in partial shade and has a high tolerance for drought conditions.
